Hidayat printed his work titled Zat, Sifat and The Divine Manifestation by Murshidzade Hidayat Inayat-Khan in Nice 1941. This shows that under such duress, Hidayat continued his spiritual studies publishing this document.
Hidayat and Helena (Leny)’s daughter Inayat was born in Nice on December 26, 1940.
When the German troops occupied Paris, Helena was already three months pregnant.
Following the armistices of June 22, 1940, Nice’s mayor Jean Medecin pledged allegiance to Marechal Petain on July 6, 1940.
September 1940, the prefect, Marcel Ribière arrived in Nice to impose Vichy government's new order.
It is notable that Noor Inayat Khan joined the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) and, as an Aircraftwoman 2nd Class, and was sent to be trained as a wireless operator in November 1940 (12).
At The Hague Sufi museum, there is a picture of Hidayat, Leny, Musharaff and Savitri with Inayat. December 26, 1940, their first child and daughter Inayat was born in Nice. (This was the picture on the first page)
Hidayat’s work showed that beyond concern, for immediate safety away from the German invasion, and, for his new life with Leny, what was in his mind during this period. I will share the introduction of this book printed in Nice in 1941:
“The purpose of this book is to unite Science and Religion in one single Brotherhood of conception.
Why does Science cut away from Religion?
Why does Religion separate itself from Science?
Science cuts away from Religion because it divides Spirit and Matter in two opposite worlds.
Religion separates itself from Science in the hiding of its truth behind the veil Symbology.
Science is certainly a reality for it has the faculty of demonstrating itself in rules, theories, chemical reactions, magnetic reactions, and atomic reactions.
Religion is also a reality for all the knowledge, which it has acquired through intuition and inspiration, is known by Science, and can be discovered in all its reactions.
If only one would rise above Science and emerge in Religion. If only one would struggle out of the drowning waves of Religion and find oneself finally face to face with Reality. But what is that reality which both, the Scientist and the Religious man, have destined themselves to prove to mankind? As long as both keep locked up in their limited domains, that reality, which each nevertheless believe to have understood, can never be unveiled; for the one, in deepening his knowledge of Matter, is eternally purchasing an
“Unknown”. The other, in deepening his knowledge of Spirit, is eternally purchasing the “enigma of Matter”.
Oh Scientist and Religious man, why shake ye not hands, for in the same way as water is solid under a certain temperature, liquid under another, gas under another, so is it with Dead Matter, Living Matter and Spirit, which are three different aspects of one and the same Reality; that Reality of which each of you have only seen one side.
In accordance to the proportion of Involution of Spirit and Evolution of Matter, that Reality is manifested in either one of these three aspects. But once again, let us not limit ourselves in divisions and analyses, for these three aspects – Dead Matter, Living Matter, and Spirit – are separated one from the other by an infinity of graduations. I have based myself upon the essence of Religions and on the laws of Science; on a ground where both become confused because of lack of mutual comprehension. It is out of this same confusion that birth is given to the three great tragedies of the intellectual world: “Spiritism”,
“Law of Reincarnation”, “Astrology”. Certainly, these are realities, but it is the abuse of these realities, which has turned them into tragedies.
Why are they tragedies? Because we only look at them from one side, either material or spiritual.
The day will come that we shall understand that the more spirit involves, the more it becomes “Matter”. The more Matter evolves, the more it becomes “Spirit”. That day only we will realize, what is the “Unknown”, which we are searching for in the domain of Science, and what is the “Enigma” of Creation, which the domain of Religion refuses to discover. Science searches the commanding force of magnetic, atomic, and chemical reactions without being able to prove the existence of the 4th Dimension, or imagine such a thing as the 5th Dimension. Religion searched the origin of man without wishing to suppose the Involution of Spirit, or hear mentioned Evolution of Spirit. Nevertheless, both distinguish two opposite forces, Spirit and Matter, and feel deeply within themselves the possibility of a third Force, which Science calls “Coincidence”, and Religion calls “God”.
I have decided in this book not to divide Spirit, Living Matter and Dead Matter in three different substances, but to consider them as being aspects of one and the same Vibration.
In this Vibration,
The Jelal Force (Spirit) is attracted to Matter
The Jemal force (Matter) is attracted to Spirit
The Kemal Force is that which produces this attraction, and yet is at the same time the attraction which it has produced, and the production of the attraction. In other words, the Kemal Force is the cause, the object, and the effect of the Vibration.
The more the rhythm of vibration is accelerated, the more the elements, which constitute the substance of this vibration, are agglomerated.
The slower the rhythm of vibration, the more the elements, which constitute the substance, are disaggregated.
From this very limited illustration in words and in imagination, on can however deduct the following theorem:
The difference between Dead Matter, Living Matter and Spirit is a difference of relativity of conception, produced by the virtual acceleration or slackening of the rhythm of the vibration “Kemal”. The latter is the origin of vibration, vibration itself, and the effect caused by vibration.
The Man of Science calls this third force: the Unknown
The Philosopher calls this third force: Attraction
The Religious Man calls this third force: Spirit
The Mystic calls this third force: The Cause and Effect of the whole Creation or “God”. (13)
Hidayat was a musician and had studied Indian classical music with his father and family. His western musical education began in Paris in 1932 at the Ecole Normale de Musique, in the violin class of Bernard Sinsheimer; the composition class of Nadia Boulanger; and their orchestra class of Diran Alexanian. Later, he attended chamber music courses given by the Lener Quartet in Budapest. (14)
In 1932, the Improvisation Tzigane that Hidayat composed at the Ecole Normale at fifteen years old shows how much music was a great part of his life. (15). Hidayat kept composing music during his forced exile in the south of France even when having to work in a ceramic factory in Dieulefit or as a carpenter.
Hidayat, Helena (Leny) and Inayat left Nice for Montelimar. What prompted them to move there is still unknown. Nice might have become too tumultuous and possibly dangerous for them.
Montelimar was part of the free zone as well. Their second child Fazal was born in Montelimar on July 20, 1942.
